Overview

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Extraction of Fetal Blood: Collecting blood from unborn calves in accordance with standard operating procedures and best practices, employing a closed system for minimal contamination.
  • Preparation and Packing: Preparing daily paperwork, packing the collected blood in coolers, and arranging for shipment to a processing facility.
  • Inventory Management: Taking inventory of collection supplies to ensure adequate stock is available.
  • Reporting: Submitting required reports, such as Weekly Production Analysis Reports, to supervisors.
  • Work Area Maintenance: Setting up and maintaining the collection area to facilitate efficient blood collection and adhere to hygiene and safety standards.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Coordinating with plant production and workflow, especially during lunch breaks. Potentially covering colleagues' shifts during absences. Maintaining a working relationship with plant management responsible for overseeing the blood collection operation.
  • Adherence to Procedures: Following established SOPs for extracting blood and other duties.
  • Safety and Ethical Practices: Ensuring adherence to safe and ethical collection practices for FBS. This includes ensuring the fetus is unaware before any invasive procedures, checking for signs of death before collection, and preventing live mature fetuses from breathing air.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining records of the number of calves that have undergone the procedure.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Previous work experience in a meat packing facility is helpful but not necessarily required. Experience in a medical setting, such as a clinic or hospital, may be beneficial.

Additional Skills/Experience/Requirements

  • Good communication skills are essential. Strong customer service skills are helpful, as are technical skills relevant to blood collection and processing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and handle confidential information. Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of information
  • Organized, with a sense of urgency and the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage shifting responsibilities in a dynamic, cross-functional teamwork environment.
  • This job is typically located within a meat packing facility.
  • Work may involve exposure to various chemicals and biohazards, requiring appropriate safety precautions.
  • This job requires adherence to strict aseptic collection techniques to minimize contamination.
  • Physical demands may include frequent bending, kneeling, and lifting, as well as prolonged standing.
  • Note: The process of collecting fetal bovine blood involves obtaining blood from bovine fetuses during the slaughter process. It's crucial to understand the ethical considerations associated with this practice. Ethical guidelines require ensuring the fetus is unconscious before blood collection and adhering to regulations on transportation and handling of pregnant animals.

Summary

America's Heartland Packing is set to open its doors in early 2025. The 775,000 sq. ft. greenfield project will include a harvest floor, carcass chillers, fabrication area, rendering, further processing area, storage coolers, freezers, and loading docks.
